Manjar, also known as « Sugar is life »
Hola chicos ! Hoy dia we will talk about a crucial topic: food. If you ever go to Chile and you like desserts, you will definitely appreciate manjar.
Almost every country in South America has its own recipe, generaly called Dulce de Leche and claims to be its inventor.
So, manjar is a mix of boiled caramel colored milk and sugar. It should contain more than 25,5% of dehydrated milk and less than 35,5% of water. The rest is all sugar…. Legend says that boiling a can of sweetened condensed milk leads to a particularly good result… After its preparation, you can pour some on every cake you can find, such as : Alfajor, Brazos de reina, Canones, Empolvados, Torta de manjar or Pancakes.
In 2014 Chile produced 31000 tons of manjar. If we take a density of 100g for 3,3 spoons, it leads us to a production of 5,5 olympic swimming pools. With 15 million inhabitants in Chile, a Chiean eats more or less 2kg every year. In one month and a half, I already ate 1kg. If I keep going this way, in July I’ll have eaten 6 or 7 kg of it. I help the country’s ecomomy the way I can…
Fun fact : in 2014 South Korea importated 114 tons of manjar, meaning it’s the fifth country worldwide and the first outside of America to import it.
For those who want more info about it or who question my saying, here is a nice report on manjar, made by the Chilean government: here
And since I’m very kind, here is one the easiest manjar recipe, : boil a can of condensed milk for three hours. Here you go.
Saludos !
